The challenge
When acquiring a package of three CFM56 engines for teardown, AerFin faced a familiar industry dilemma: how to extract maximum value from assets that, at first glance, appeared to be at the end of their serviceable life. One of the engines had been deemed unserviceable and, under typical circumstances, would have been dismantled for parts. But our team saw something others didn’t.
The way ahead
Leveraging our trading insight and in-house technical expertise, we identified a viable path to restore value from the unserviceable engine. Our team proposed a rebuild, repurposing serviceable 21X and 22X modules from one of the other engines in the package.
The work was completed entirely at AerFin’s MRO facility at Indurent Park in South Wales, where our skilled engineers performed the complex module swap using OEM-certified tooling and internal infrastructure.
Key elements of the project included:
- Technical insight and trading strategy: Identifying value in an asset marked for teardown and aligning rebuild potential with market demand
- In-house module swap: Completed at our MRO facility to accelerate turnaround and reduce costs
- Asset value optimisation: Extending engine life to improve resale value and provide flexibility across multiple channels – including resale, lease, or further teardown
- End-to-end infrastructure: Final testing, marked the first time we’ve completed this level of full-cycle engine restoration using internal resources
The outcome
The engine was successfully restored, tested and sold – transforming an asset once considered beyond repair into a commercially viable unit.
This project showcases the strength of AerFin’s integrated business model: bringing together deep technical capability and commercial agility to unlock new value streams. It also opens up new opportunities for how we manage engine material going forward — with smarter, faster, and more flexible solutions for our customers.
At AerFin we pride ourselves on seeing value where others don’t. This is a real testament to the capability we’ve built in-house – and it’s only the beginning.
Through projects like this, AerFin continues to define The Way Ahead – delivering tangible value, extending asset life, and keeping global fleets flying.
